Welcome—you made it.
And since you’re here, consider this your official permission to slow down, look around, and imagine a little more adventure in your everyday life.

The Fargo Escape Plan is our way of saying: you don’t have to wait for someday.

Who We Are

We’re Melissa and Joe, a married couple navigating midlife, real jobs, real responsibilities—and a growing desire to experience more of the world together.

We call Cleveland, Ohio home. Joe is a Cleveland native through and through, while Melissa grew up in Greenville, South Carolina, where much of her family still lives (and where sweet tea and Southern charm are always part of the visit).

Joe has grown children, and together we’re proud grandparents to three amazing grandkids—a role that keeps life joyful, loud, and meaningful.

And of course, we share our home with the real boss of The Fargo Escape Plan:
Rugby, our orange cat.

Meet Rugby 🐾

Every good escape plan needs a boss—and ours has whiskers.

Rugby came to us as a rescue rehome through one of Melissa’s PreK families who, through circumstances beyond their control, were no longer able to keep him. Not long after saying goodbye to Taz, our beloved 17-year-old cat, Rugby found his way into our home—and into the quiet spaces that needed healing.

He’s smart, endlessly curious, and far more energetic than his laid-back nap schedule would suggest. Rugby loves snacks (especially when he thinks they’re his idea), thrives on attention, and brings a steady stream of silly moments that keep us laughing—whether that’s dramatic flops, surprise zoomies, or supervising everything we do with great seriousness.

Around here, Rugby represents what we believe at our core:
that love can be passed forward, that new chapters can honor old ones, and that it’s okay to say yes again—even after loss.

You’ll see him often. He runs the place.

Why The Fargo Escape Plan Exists

We didn’t sell everything.
We didn’t quit our jobs.
We didn’t run away from life.

We simply stopped waiting for permission.

The Fargo Escape Plan was born from the realization that adventure doesn’t require a dramatic escape—it lives in road trips, weekend wanderings, local discoveries, quiet moments, missed turns, and saying yes more often than maybe later.

But there’s more to that story.

In January of 2025, everything shifted in an instant. Joe slipped on black ice, resulting in a traumatic head injury that included multiple brain bleeds and a fractured skull. What began as an ordinary winter moment quickly became life-altering.

Joe spent several days in the ICU, followed by weeks of recovery and a month away from work. Even now, he continues to experience lingering effects from the fall—daily reminders that healing isn’t always fast or predictable.

That moment changed how we see time.

It stripped away the illusion that there will always be a “later,” a better season, or a more convenient moment to live fully. It reminded us—clearly and undeniably—that life can change in an instant.

The Fargo Escape Plan exists because we no longer want to put life on hold.

It exists because waiting feels riskier than trying.
Because love, curiosity, and adventure don’t need perfect conditions.
Because someday isn’t promised—but now is here.

This blog is our way of choosing life as it is, while we can.

About Those Permissions

You’ll see permissions pop up often around here—and that’s intentional.

So many of us are waiting for approval we don’t actually need:

  • Permission to rest
  • Permission to explore
  • Permission to try something new
  • Permission to choose joy
  • Permission to live fully right now

We believe you already have it—you just need a reminder.

Consider this blog your ongoing permission slip to:

  • Take the trip
  • Try the trail
  • Visit the small town
  • Get curious
  • Choose wonder

What We Love (and What You’ll See Here)

We bring our full selves into this space:

  • Melissa loves photography, being out in nature, frogs (yes, frogs 🐸), and tending to an ever-growing collection of houseplants. If there’s a quiet path, a camera, or something green growing nearby, she’s happy.
  • Joe is endlessly fascinated by space, planes, and trains. If it flies, launches, or runs on rails, he’s all in.
  • Together, we’re lifelong Star Wars fans, united by a love of storytelling, adventure, and epic journeys (with or without lightsabers).

On this blog, you’ll find:

  • Travel stories big and small
  • Road trips, local escapes, and meaningful destinations
  • Reflections on marriage, midlife, and choosing adventure now
  • Photography, observations, and honest moments
  • Frequent appearances (and opinions) from Rugby

What to Look Out For

This space isn’t about perfection—it’s about possibility.

It’s for anyone who feels the pull to explore but doesn’t want to abandon the life they’ve built. It’s for people who believe growth doesn’t have an expiration date. It’s for those who need a reminder that adventure is allowed—even encouraged.

So welcome to The Fargo Escape Plan.
Make yourself comfortable.
Rugby is watching.
And just in case you were wondering…

You have permission.

Because you don’t need permission…
…but sometimes it helps to hear it anyway.
